Understand the history of markup languages, qualifying the creation of XML.
Realize the Impact of XML on Web technology.
Discover new ways to use XML in your applications, with an understanding of its structure, uses, and idiosyncrasies.
Create both well-formed and optionally valid XML that complies with the XML standard and the requirements of your application.
Program XML to navigate the hierarchy of data to extract and update data in any Windows development environment, including Web applications.
Understand how to use XML with different components in a distributed application.
Be prepared to use XHTML, which is the new claimant to the HTML throne of the standard on which the Web is based.

Prerequisites: Familiarity with HTML tags is helpful, but not required. Programming experience (e.g., Visual Basic, C++, Java) is helpful in understanding some of the material, but not required. Web programming experience (e.g., VBScript, javascript, ASP, JSP) is helpful in understanding some of the material, but not required.
